Exploring Ceramic Techniques

Foundation Class
Level - Beginner to Beginner-Intermediate 12 students
$760 PER 12 WEEK FULL SEMESTER

  • WHEEL & HANDBUILDING

    This class explores specific clay-making techniques within both wheel and handbuilding practices. Emphasis will be placed on the material of clay and understanding its properties & possibilities. Beginning first with handbuilding techniques and then exploring wheelthrowing foundations, students will be given prompts & inspiration ahead of each class. This class will encourage students to intentionally think about the crossover of design & practical, structural builds. Specific techniques that will be explored include piercing, kurinuki, altering wheel-thrown vessels, surface decoration, and more. This class is extremely beginner friendly, offering a breadth of ceramic techniques to get a strong foundation going.

  • WHEEL THROWING CLASS

    Level: Beginner to Intermediate

    This is an all-levels ceramics class focused on utilizing the potter’s wheel to make vessels – functional (e.g., dishware), sculptural, etc. Classes are tailored to the specific cohort of students & their goals, but will always cover wedging, centering clay, pulling steady & even walls, trimming, attachments, glazing, and decorative techniques across the 12 weeks.

Wheel throwing & Handbuilding Class
Level - Beginner to Intermediate 12 students

  • WHEEL THROWING & HANDBUILDING CLASS

    Level: Beginner to Intermediate

    This is an all-levels ceramic class that will cover a bit of both handbuilding techniques and utilizing the potter’s wheel to make functional or sculptural work. Beginner students will cover wedging, centering on the wheel, throwing on the wheel, pinching, coiling, slab building, making attachments, decorating, and glazing. Intermediate and advanced students refine their skills and can learn to merge both handbuilding techniques with wheel throwing to make final pieces.

Leveling Up Handbuilding

Level- Intermediate to Advanced

  • This class is for intermediate students who have a strong comfort & proficiency with basic handbuilding techniques and who may want to bring their practice to new heights (possibly even literally!). In this class, you will hone in on skills for technical builds, including scaling up, sculpting/figurative work, designing internal supports, etc. Learn how to make more complex ideas or build in a larger format, whether it’s for functional ware or sculptural work, that can withstand the drying and firing processes.


    *While these are not hard & fast rules, we are looking for students who have been taking classes for more than a year+; who are comfortable with a variety of handbuilding techniques; have reliable/consistent glaze outcomes. Coil & Slab

    This is an all-levels ceramic class focused on making functional and sculptural work through handbuilding techniques. Each class is tailored to the specific cohort of students & their goals, but will always cover wedging, pinching, coiling, slab building, extrusion, attachments, glazing, and decorative techniques across the 12 weeks.

    This is an all-levels ceramic class focused on making functional tableware such as plates, bowls, mugs, candleholders, vases, and other items. Each class is tailored to the specific cohort of students & their goals, but will always cover wedging, pinching, coiling, slab building, extrusion, attachments, glazing, and decorative techniques across the 12 weeks.

Wheel Throwing Class
Level- Intermediate to Advanced

  • WHEEL THROWING CLASS

    Level: Intermediate to Advanced

    This class is for intermediate-advanced students who have mastered the basics of throwing, trimming, and glazing, and are ready for more complex techniques and forms as well as a deeper, more nuanced dive into lessons from Center & Throw (e.g., lids, spouts, handles, sets, multi-piece forms, etc.).


    *While these are not hard & fast rules, we are looking for students who have been taking classes for more than a year+; who are comfortable wedging, centering & consistently pulling 5+lbs of clay; have reliable/consistent glaze outcomes. If you are unsure if you fit into an intermediate/advanced class, please consult your current instructor or reach out to education@clayspacebk.com

Independent Study Ceramics

Wheel throwing &/or Handbuilding Classes
Level- Intermediate to Advanced
$900 PER 12 WEEK FULL SEMESTER

  • ***Students MUST HAVE approval by their current instructor and must reach out to education@clayspacebk.com before registering

    ***If you register without permission, you may be refunded minus an administrative fee. Please reach out BEFORE registering.

  • This class is particularly great for anyone who wants to hone in on specific techniques or skills, is working on a project and wants individualized guidance, and/or is looking to just become more adept in their clay practice in order to eventually become a member at the studio. This also offers a more intimate setting with just one or two other students at a time with the instructor, at a time that works for you (can fluctuate week to week). This class also comes with unlimited bench time included. The Independent Study course will be offered in two 6-week segments. Students can register for one or both sessions.

    *Prerequisite: have taken multiple beginning/intermediate classes and have confidence in all wheel throwing or hand building basics, including wedging, centering, and have knowledge of ceramic process.

    • Students meet once a week in group or individually by appointment with Minkyung Choi

    • INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED students with permission from the instructor is needed for registration. Email Education@clayspacebk.com with your inquiries before registering.

    • Once approved, you may register.

    • Students will set up their weekly instruction schedule with Min based on a mutual coordinated meeting time for 1-2 hours of instruction in small groups. Demonstrations are guided by student requests. Each student has access to Min to ask questions and receive answers and guidance.

    • $100 Unlimited Bench Time Card is included in the cost of tuition.

  • Min Choi, who has decades of making and teaching experience, will provide personalized instruction depending on your goals. Whether you are intermediate, advanced, or a seasoned professional, you can bring a plan, idea, technical difficulties, or inspiration to meet and work together to get you from point A to point B.

Class Details

All students will be asked to follow our Clay Space Community Agreements

Supplies:

  • The class fee includes clay and glaze.

  • Firings are 7 cents per cubic inch for both firings.

  • As a registered student you will have 4 hours per week of bench time. 12-week Session students can purchase a Unlimited Bench time Card for extra practice hours! [Summer only, 8-week card here]

  • Depending on your class selection, please be prepared to purchase Clay Space Tool Kits and supplies if you do not already have them. Each class registration has descriptions and links to all products sold in our shop! They can be stored in the classroom and towels and aprons should be taken home weekly for cleaning.

  • Clay Space is open to students M-Sa 10am-9.30pm, Su 10am-9pm during every semester.

Waitlist:

If open spots become available in a waitlisted course, waitlisted students will be contacted to register. Please note, we notify the whole waitlist at once and space in classes is first come first serve.

Missed Class Policy:

We do our best to work with your schedule and offer up to 3 makeups to our students to be used within the current semester only. To make up a class, you must arrive at a comparable class on time and wait to see if there is an open spot. If there is not, you cannot make up the class at this time. If there is a spot, ask the instructor if you can attend. They have the option to agree or not. Makeups cannot be guaranteed and there is no refund for missed classes. If you cannot fulfill a makeup class, you can receive an additional 3 hours of benchtime for this missed class. Email Education@clayspacebk.com with your class information to receive these accommodations, but do not ask us to arrange a make up.

Cancellation Policy:

If you register for the wrong class, please email to be transferred, do not double book, or you will be charged a change of registration fee of 3%.

To request a cancellation, you must contact us in writing.

***More than 10 days prior to the first class of your session: you may receive a refund minus a $20 fee onto a gift card, or refund to your payment card minus a $50 processing fee

***10 days or less to the start of class: receive a refund minus $100 or a gift card minus a $20 fee

***Within 1 week of start of class: receive a refund of 50% (of the entire class fee)

There are no refunds or tuition applied to another semester once the session begins. Students are responsible to pay for the entire semester if they have chosen the payment plan. Email Education@clayspacebk.com with your cancellation request.

We May Cancel:

If the class does not fill sufficiently, we may cancel and try to move students to another class, apply tuition to another class or semester, or provide a full refund.

Video & Photographs:

Clay Space reserves the right to use photographs and/or videos taken during classes & workshops to market and promote our programs. Any student or legal guardian who does not wish to have his or her child photographed will be able to opt-out during registration. 

Masking:

Clay Space is mask optional. If the CDC guidelines change at any point before or during the session we will follow the state’s requirements. In the event of a shut down, wherever possible, we will provide materials and online instruction to fulfill the remainder of the session. Where this is not possible, we will give you credit towards another current or future class, firing, or materials.
