SESSION I: July 13th-16th: City Dwellers In this 4-day week (M-Th), campers will have the opportunity to build their world in clay and will explore what it means to live in a city! The main project for this week will include building a street to a city neighborhood as a group, each artist will be able to make their own room or a building structure, neighborhood animals, figurines of people and clay cars! As well, kids will imagine their ideal world and community and have the opportunity to project these bigger ideas into drawing.
SESSION II: July 27th-31st Wearable Clay In this 4-day week (M-Th), we’ll be pushing the boundaries of what you can typically make with clay! Kids will explore making wearable objects out of clay, including buttons, pins, wands, and other fantasy objects. Artists will have the opportunity to experiment with wire loops embedded into clay for making jewelry, keychains and masks. Kids will get to walk away with some fresh clay bling!
SESSION III: August 10th-13th Art & Archeology We go back in time as ceramic artists in the ancient world! This week is all about exploring clay’s rich history in ancient cultures. Before there was plastic, clay was the primary resource for making toys, and food storage vessels and decorations for important buildings like tombs, churches, and various cultural explorations in clay. Projects during this week include writing stamps, tile decoration, ceramic figurines and jars inspired by ancient cultures or relics.
SESSION IV: August 17th- 20th Art & Environment with Kingsland Wildflower In this 4-day week (M-Th) of clay camp, artists will explore clay’s relationship with plant life and the earth. Kids will have the opportunity to engage in projects that cultivate plant life at home and in their urban environment. Artists will learn about clay’s origins on earth and investigate different kinds of clay to build with. Projects include coil pot planters, seed sculptures and plant figurines. On Wednesday or Thursday (depending on weather) we will take a field trip to the Newtown Creek Alliance to visit their Kingsland Wildflower space for a day of programming!
Our Kid’s Clay Camp (Ages 6-12) will immerse your child in the ceramic process. At Clay Space we aim to create artwork that can live on and serve as a kid's time capsule of thought and creative expression. Through hand building, they will be given the tools to create the visions in their head and take their projects to the next level. The projects made during the week will be put through the formal ceramic process of firing so that their artwork can be used in daily life and loved for years to come. We like to think of clay as magical!
Each week centers around a theme which is tailored to clay and its properties. These themes are a way to captivate the kids’ attention and throw them into a niche of the ceramic world. Even though our weeks are themed we feel it is important to empower the kids to follow their independent interests and will assist them in independent led projects.
We have an indoor and an outdoor space where different types of hands-on activities can take place. If we have a larger group we plan on splitting up by age and switching between spaces and activities. Weather permitting, we'll spend part of the last camp day at McGolrick Park.
We are thrilled to invite your child into the ceramic process. It has many stages which will lead to fully fired ceramic work that can be cherished and used daily for years to come. This process can take some time to complete as there are many different stages and multiple firings. Pieces from your camp week will be able to be picked up 2 weeks after camp ends. They will be able to customize their creations using underglaze decoration and everything will be glazed in clear. In the meantime your child will be bringing home drawings and other artworks.
Inviting friends and siblings is encouraged! We offer a 10% sibling discount.
